Do you despair the look of unsightly wires? Alexander Joseph is leading a lighting revolution with its cordless lamps so that beautifully designed interiors can be liberated from trailing cables.

Not only do its creations remove the need for tucking wires under carpets and rugs or encasing them in unappealing cable trunking as they weave their way to wall sockets, but they bring finesse and form to the same degree as traditionally fitted lighting – a rarity in the wireless world.

Who is Alexander Joseph?

Founded by inventor Mark Robinson, he came up with the idea for Alexander Joseph lighting following the re-design of his own home. Extensive online searches revealed cordless lamps were typically cheap, novelty and unsophisticated in design or the reserve of the garden accessory market.

Recognising an opportunity ripe for the taking, he established the British brand so that Alexander Joseph could bring a solution to the interiors lovers and wire haters of the world, but to do so, had to come up with a new battery technology to make cordless lighting feasible and highly functioning.

Fast-forward to today, Alexander Joseph is becoming a firm favourite with leading interior designers, thanks to its problem-solving pedigree, pioneering technology and supremely high quality aesthetic and craftsmanship.

What lies behind each and every one of its cordless lamps?

At the heart of an Alexander Joseph luxury lamp lies the brand’s own battery cell technology. It’s this invention that allows them to be completely cordless.

Each lamp stays lit for over 52 hours before recharging is needed. It means they can be transported around a home should you not want a fixed lighting position – the modern day version of a candle leading the way to bed – or taken to the garden for alfresco dining and even for a beach or meadow picnic.

A quintessentially British brand, all of Alexander Joseph’s creations are made by hand from start to finish in Dorset by UK designers and artisans. This specialist team is also responsible for the slow, selective choosing of all raw materials to ensure nothing but the highest quality goes into every cordless lamp.

Every lamp has either a ceramic or glass body with a master craftsman looking after each respective stage of the making process. Not a single stage is automated or hurried in any of Alexander Joseph’s small specialist-specific workshops. One of the earliest steps sees molten glass on the end of a lance, ready to be sculpted into its distinctive design.

The lamps all have unique, patent-pending battery cells and electronics. This technology is deliberately discrete and what makes many designers see Alexander Joseph lamps as the only viable alternative to conventional lamps. Alexander Joseph has even created its own vintage-style LED bulbs so that no compromise is having to be made on the aesthetics of the lamp and the ambiance from the bulb.

It takes at least eight hours to assemble a single lamp, though more elaborate designs and one-off commissions take significantly longer. For example, a recent one-of-a-kind lamp took close to 16 weeks to craft and 60 hours to painstakingly assemble. The level of quality is immediately evident as soon as you lift an Alexander James lamp – each one weighs a minimum of 4kg with some as much as 18kg.
