California Dreaming with Louise Roe’s Interior

Stylist Louise Roe talks us through her laid-back at-home style

It’s a perfect sunny day in Los Angeles. The streets are drenched in sunlight, rays beam onto the roads and the palm trees lining the streets glisten over the cityscape. The balmy climes make leaving my beautiful vast suite at The London West Hollywood that little bit easier, so too does the idea of getting to play in the wardrobe of today’s interviewee. When I arrive on location at the second-floor apartment of the four-story building, I am met at the door by our gracious host, TV presenter and fashion journalist, Louise Roe, 31. Five-foot 10-inches tall, with flawless skin, wearing a cute sun dress, ballet flats and wrapped up in a cosy cardigan, when Roe ushers me in I instantly feel welcomed by her gorgeous smile and girlish charm.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be an interior designer. So fashion and interiors have always been very linked in my opinion. Runway trends definitely impact the interior world.”

This same charm has lit up such hit shows as The City, Plain Jane and Fashion Star, and her skill and delightfulness has also landed her the job of hosting the Oscars red carpet for Access Hollywood this year and Pop Style which starts this May. But when she moved into this apartment in West Hollywood two years ago, Roe got the chance to really dabble in one of her other passions in life: interiors. “I love and always have loved interiors. When I was a little girl I wanted to be an interior designer,” Roe says looking around the two-bedroom apartment she shares with her fiancé, Josh Slack, 25.

A casual-luxe yet considered and bright space, thanks to the meticulous styling and mostly cream and snow-white colour palette. The two-bedroom apartment is big and open by way of archways and pillars that give each of the living areas the illusion of separate rooms but create an open living space through the kitchen, dining area and sitting room.

As you move through the house you come to the second bedroom which has been made into an office/wardrobe for Roe. And rightly so given her career in fashion. The wardrobe room is an emporium of shoes, jewellery, clothes and endless accessories – hats, sunglasses and every shape and size handbag that comes to mind. Roe’s bedroom is neat and organised and everything has its place. The statement bed with a high, dusty-blue, button-tufted suede headboard is the perfect choice for the rising star. Dressed with crisp white sheets and colour introduced via the throw and collection of cushions, the bedding speaks of Roe’s experience and skill at accessorising outfits – considered, styled and en pointe. The apartment also boasts a lovely outdoor terrace for entertaining or a much-needed place to enjoy the sunny weather. One the stand-out features of this home is the spacious double-sink bathroom where the mirror is lit up with lights. It’s very Hollywood but not at all over the top and is in keeping with Roe’s preference to steer clear of overtly girly interiors. “I like a masculine style and my ideal is actually quite a 70s look but in a glamorous way,” she says.

Within a stone’s throw from bustling Sunset Boulevard, you’d be forgiven for thinking this quiet and calm apartment is hidden somewhere in the Hollywood Hills. This peacefulness is another important factor for Roe because of her very busy schedule which includes flying back to England every couple of months. “I travel a lot so when I get in with my suitcase I just want to feel like, ‘Aw, I’m home.’ And I really get that here.”

From hikes in the canyons to getting up to go to the flower market in her spare time, LA has definitely influenced Roe’s interior style. “There’s a plethora of beautiful mid-century and Spanish architecture and a lot of ranch homes that blend the two styles,” she explains. “I fell in love with every aesthetic aspect of those styles.”

Santa Barbara, I am told, is the location of Roe’s “dream house” and also where the starlet plans on marrying her partner next year. Although Roe is tight-lipped about the style of her wedding, she does say, “I’m doing some planning here and there for the wedding. It is going to be next year and definitely in sunny California, in Santa Barbara.” Other than planning her big day, Roe has a very busy year ahead – “My new spring line of shoes, bags and jewellery launches on mid April, there’s more Plain Jane and then in May I start filming Pop Style for the Style Network.” Which then leads me to ask about her plans for a family. “Having a big family would be nice. Not too enormous. Not like a football team,” she says. So it seems that big dream house in Santa Barbara might just be a necessity.

Louise Roe’s Interior Tips for a Stylish Space

1. Personal Touch

A home which doesn’t reflect the tastes of its owner often lacks personality and interest. Inspiring artwork, items which hint to my favourite hobbies and reminders of home are the ways in which I put my stamp on my home.

2. Balance Act

Aim to strike a balance between welcoming and stylish. Things like cosy blankets, flattering lighting and fresh flowers will offer an inviting appeal as well as offering a refined look to your space.

3. Accessory All Areas

Accessorising is an easy way to update a room but it’s a skill which can take time to perfect. Get creative with table vignettes but don’t go overboard; soften clean lines with plush cushions and add touches of gold for a subtle glamour injection.
