Inspired by the discovery of a palatial Roman mosaic on the site of his Wiltshire farmhouse, bespoke rug designer Luke Irwin has transformed his serendipitous encounter with the ancient past into a masterpiece for the modern age: a stunning, Persian hand-knotted silk floor covering with the tactile texture of mosaicked tesserae.
PAST MEETS PRESENT
Ever so subtle hints of ancient ornamentation lie beneath the rug’s watercolour wash of pink and grey hues, simulating a bygone luxury ruined by the passing ages yet rediscovering a new beauty and place within the present day.
Seven stages of artisanal expertise perfect each rug. From carding, spinning and dying the fibres to shaving the pile with scissors, the process – entirely executed by hand – requires several months of meticulous crafting, ethically performed in India. The result is a truly individual work of art.
