Discover Jean-Louis Deniot
Currently ranked in Architectural Digest’s AD100 – the magazine’s annual list of the top talents in architecture and interior design – Jean-Louis Deniot is a design force to be reckoned with. Not an advocate of “pure contemporary” as he calls it, the interior designer and architect’s portfolio is simply awash with nods to other time periods (“I need to have history in my work.”) which results in a signature eclectic style. And this is eclectic in the most sophisticated sense of the word, tempered with harmonious colour palettes (notably pale neutrals) and faultless finishes. Carved sleigh beds sit alongside sleek floor lights, bespoke chairs and modern artwork; Art Deco styled spaces are updated with contemporary coffee table vignettes of sculptural pieces; and the French country look is made fabulously chic with refined seating, polished stone tables and golden wall art. Citing renowned interior designer Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941), traveling, fashion and books (“I purchase mounds of books”) as inspirations, the world of Jean-Louis is cultured, unique and wonderfully livable.
“I have had a passion for interiors since I was a small child,” the French-born creative tells us, “I started drawing and painting at the age of three and progressed to making models of miniature architecture structures and interior decors by the age of ten. At the age of twelve, I understood that I was destined to do interior design and architecture for a living.”
My home style is less about style than it is about environment. I surround myself with what suits me.
One thing to know about Jean-Louis is that he’s no label snob, preferring to highlight genuine talent over ubiquitously popular designs – “Luxury is all about discretion; it is something to be felt rather than seen.”
