What’s so nice about the projects of London-based interior designer René Dekker is their penchant for comfortable luxury. Sure, they might be elegant taupe-hued spaces lit by Venetian glass chandeliers, grounded with stunning parquet flooring and dressed with more tactile fabrics than you can shake a stick at but they’re also brilliantly inviting. Furniture arrangements are social, large open rooms are split into more intimate areas and proportions are just perfect – well, the designer does compare his creations to a well-tailored Chanel suit after all. And it’s true that the apple never falls far from the tree with René describing his own style as, “structured, considered, classical, elegant.” Despite such a classic look, however, René was somewhat of a trendsetter in 1980s South Africa – “interior design was almost unheard of in South Africa but after my initial interview at the college, I left thinking how I could not believe that an exciting career such as this could even be possible.” And the excitement has never left the designer who says he’s inspired by the passion he sees in people – “Whenever I meet a manufacturer or supplier who is passionate about their product, or a designer who is passionate about their skill, it completely inspires me.”

Boldly Go

The designer tells us his design mantra is an admirable “be bold or go home” – “I always tell anyone who will listen that you should not give a client a scheme that they could have achieved themselves – what is the point of that? Translate what they want into something that will give them complete enjoyment and then add the pizazz!”

In a world of ‘disposable’, it is an absolute luxury to be able to hold something that you bought ten years ago and still feel that it is part of your life.

Winning Formula

Of his winning formula for a timeless home, René explains, “All of [my] possessions have a classical element to them be it in the leg or the fabric or the proportion [and] the colour palette is limited allowing it to be a blank canvas into which we can incorporate [my] art collection.
