William Banks-Blaney’s WilliamVintage store in London’s Marylebone is a favourite of Lana del Ray, Eva Green, Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe, to name but a few, so it’s seems natural that he has been called “The Vintage King” by Vogue. Both an interior designer and collector/curator of vintage clothing and vintage haute couture, British-born Banks-Blaney trained formally in art history at the University of Buckingham. He worked as an interior decorator for a while (and still has a few clients), but today his by-appointment store in London takes up most of this debonair gentleman’s time. “As a child, I was reading antique guides when others were reading Beano… my interests increased from antique furniture to contemporary design, then to interior design and then to WilliamVintage which unites all those interests and keeps my ‘inner nerd’ happy too,” he explains. When it comes to his home he favours “a mix of mix-century modern blended with lots of Georgian mahogany and 20th century art”.

Organised Style

With such a busy schedule there’s no such thing as a typical day for Banks-Blaney. If he had to sum it up, though, he says “it includes meeting with our clients, liaising with stylists in London and LA on important pieces for red carpet events and general day-to-day running of a business, or travelling for buying trips.”

My background as an interior designer before founding WilliamVintage means that I love seeing the detail and contrast in fashion or architecture or any aspect of design.

Design hunter

Travelling the world on buying trips means Banks-Blaney has discovered some amazing places to shop for the home. “I love hunting for mid-century modern furniture in Palm Springs, for 18th century Georgian in Sussex and contemporary glass art in the glass factory in Bermondsey High Street in London,” he enthuses.
