7 Unforgettable Green Interior Design ideas

These green rooms are enough to inspire style envy

Linda Holmes
By Linda Holmes, Interiors Director

We can’t help but think of green when the spring season arrives but, this year, it seems like the colour is a welcome design choice regardless of seasonal shifts. Green interiors can evoke thoughts of everything from balance, growth and restoration to connotations of wealth, health and nurturing.

From that Kips Bay Show House dining room to India Mahdavi’s Ladurée salon for the Hôtel des Bergues, green shows up in the most prestigious of places and, unlike its blue counterparts, is always slightly unexpected, making it a confident design choice. These are some of our favourites right now.

1. Persian Green Interiors

No stranger to the verdant side of the colour wheel, green enthusiast Ken Fulk chose a Persian green for the interiors of San Francisco’s Uncle Harry’s bar, set in the super-cool, high-end development The Harrison. Everything from the walls to the ceiling and upholstery is interpreted in the blue-green hue and coordinated with tiger and bohemian prints, chinoiserie furniture and brass detailing. A casual kilim rug and rustic wood floor create a desirable tension, resulting in a glamorous yet welcoming space.

2. Paris Green Interiors

Thanks to its bold palette and whimsical detailing, Jonathan Rachman’s Paris green living room captured the hearts of all who attended the San Francisco Decorator Show Case. The room was clad in a hand-embroidered and hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper which was a collaboration between the designer and the prestigious wallpaper house who are longtime friends. To enhance the beauty of the wallpaper even more, varying hues of green were used throughout the space from the velvety fabric of the generous button-tufted sofa, armchairs and window box to the stylised pelmets and mantlepiece vase arrangement. To finish the space off, an equally impressive ceiling was created with decorative plasterwork and gilded rosettes for a modern take on opulence.

3. Emerald Green Interiors

Gloss, emerald and gold – there may not be a formula for poker room design but, if there was, Ken Fulk sure does know it. The immersive space recalls the bold and colourful work of American designer Dorothy Draper with its lustrous panelled walls, glamorously rethought mid-century modern chairs and handsome brass accents. Fulk draws the eye around the room with unique lighting, pops of black and a contrasting russet gloss sideboard.

4. Jade Green Interiors

There are some interiors that are just very difficult to forget because of their complete confidence and storytelling. Ken Fulk’s jade-hued Kips Bay Show House dining room is one of those rooms. Themed as a Magical Menagerie, the room is one of this year’s most photographed spaces. Its panelled cabinetry and fireplace are slicked in a lush green shade whilst a hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper (featuring inquisitive monkeys, lounging leopards and boughs of parrots) and a hand-painted “sky” ceiling creates a captivating scene above. The green palette is made even more vibrant by raspberry red shield-back dining chairs and warm mahogany tones. Interior design at its best.

5. Rifle Green Interiors

When Doug Friedman’s photographs of actress Jessica Chastain’s living room by Carrier and Company first featured in Architectural Digest last year, the stock for antique upholstery, warm woods and deep green went through the roof. The beautifully appointed room is both mature and layered in its design with engaging elements scattered throughout. A tiered crystal chandelier (which works incredibly against its rich background); a collection of mantlepiece artwork; and a bay window of stained glass – the space is a wonderland for traditionalists.

6. Bottle Green Interiors

A traditional favourite for the grand wooden panelled spaces and handsome leather-topped furniture pieces of last century, bottle green has a history of accenting masculine spaces. These days, it’s as smart and dapper as ever (especially when combined with updated copper finishes), translating seamlessly into contemporary interiors of the 21st century. Although modern in style, the tailored armchairs and coordinating marble-topped side table of Spinocchia Freund’s Kingsgate penthouse apartment maintain a style gravitas afforded by their rich palette. Accessorised by a translucent alabaster lamp, golden AERIN match striker and cushions embroidered with metallic threads, the look is softened to perfection.

7. Army Green Interiors

A green for the less intrepid, army green is earthy and mature (in a good way). Spinocchia Freund’s Kingsgate bedroom makes use of the subdued hue by incorporating army green velvet panels into a floor-to-ceiling built-in headboard design. An elegant bench at the end of the bed carries the colour forward which is paired with inviting warm neutrals. Offering just enough of a contrast, a midnight green photographic print pops nearby whilst brass proves to be the best choice for the room’s metallic accents.
