How To Decorate Your Home For Christmas

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas with these tips for winning the festive game

Decking the halls is always a highlight of the run up to Christmas. As the weather begins to cool, cosy layering comes into play; the dark nights call for room-enhancing glistening accents; and more time spent indoors entertaining means a festive overhaul of your social areas. What’s not to love?

Follow our Christmas home decor guide (thankfully, void of tinsel, inflatable snowmen and LED reindeers) to put the chic into your decorating this season.

Step 1: Choose your colour scheme

We appreciate a themed decor scheme as much as the rest of them but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it we say and you can’t go wrong with the perennial Christmas favourites. Red and green say Christmas like no other and (accented subtly with touches of gold to offer a refined appeal) brings out the child in all of us. Non-traditional patterns are a way to give the palette a modern take.

Step 2: Decorate the tree

For many, the annual decorating of the tree is a near-hallowed event, preserved in the minds of children and adults alike. It’s the perfect Christmas experience—the smell of the pine needles is just right, heirloom baubles sit alongside carefully chosen new ornaments and the first twinkle of the fairy lights is a momentous occasion. When decorating, try to maintain a sense of balance without being too symmetrical and include baubles in different finishes.

Take a masterclass in decorating your tree like the A-list with expert guidance from celebrity florist Jeff Leatham.

Step 3: Add some cosy touches

The prospect of a cosy home is just about the only thing we to be accepted about the dropping mercury levels. A home, like a wardrobe, should reflect the changing seasons and, just as you start to pull out your winter ensembles, you should think about layering up your interior as well. Tactile cushions and throws in cashmere and faux furs are the call of the season whilst flickering candle light offers a sense of winter magic.

Step 4: Deck the halls

Once the main event (the tree) is ready, you’ll also want to extend your decorating to other areas of your home. Stockings on mantlepieces, garlands on bannisters, wreaths on doors—a festive home is so much more than a well-dressed tree. Coordinate your decor with your tree style and with your home’s aesthetic for a cohesive Christmas display.

Step 5: Dress the table

You’ll probably host more dinner parties within the month of December than you will the rest of the year so a little festive table makeover should be on the cards too. Plan your menu ahead so that you can work out which additional pieces of serveware you’ll need and, don’t forget, ‘tis the season for decorations so choose a beautiful centrepiece to bring it all together.

Step 6: Prepare to entertain

The best thing about the festive season is getting the chance to spend it with your nearest and dearest whether they’re staying for the week or just popping by. However long they’re around, make sure you play the hostess (or host) with the mostest and offer them a tall glass of something refreshing. A beautifully timeless stemware set and exquisite bar accessories (teamed with canapé plates and a charcuterie board) will be your most used investments this season.
