Interview with Tara Bernerd, Interior Designer

A quick catch up with the creator of super-cool hotels and refined lofts

Jon Sharpe
By Jon Sharpe, Chief Creative Officer

A tendency toward masculine palettes, industrial finishes and moody lighting renders London designer Tara Bernerd a go-to for urban hotels and atmospheric restaurants in the world’s most influential metropolises.

As design principal of her eponymous Tara Bernerd & Partners studio since its founding in 2002, she has spearheaded international projects from Miami to Hong Kong and collaborated with the very best in the world of hospitality. (The Four Seasons, Fort Capital, Starwood Capital, Thompson Hotels, SIXTY Hotels, Belmond and Berkeley Group are just a few of her clients.) Whilst residential is most definitely in her armoury, having cut her teeth as part of the initial team at Philippe Starck’s Yoo studio, these days the creative’s portfolio leans to public spaces.

We caught up with Tara in between her new projects, which include the Thompson Hollywood and Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale, to get her thoughts on a few things.

If I had my way, design would be…

Accessible everywhere

My favourite space to decorate is a…

Hotel because it represents the lifestyles of today and is that juxtaposition between great practicality and creative design

The last interior which really made an impact on me was…

The work we’re still in the midst of – building a resort in Mexico – because we are so indigenous with our work that soaking up the culture and the demands was a departure from perhaps the majority of our work which has been in key cities

I’d love to trade places with…

I’m not so much drawn to trading places, but perhaps admiring others’ exceptional skills. I believe hugely in the energies of other designers and the stimulation we can benefit from others, such as Thomas Heatherwick

Designers should never…

Be complacent

“The most important aspect of design is seeking the components that are authentic, that will stand true in time.”

A home is never complete without…

A soul and an understanding of the DNA of a place before furniture and accessories

Quality is…

Time – time given to the brief, the space planning and time given to detail

My favourite thing about being a designer is…

From my point, it is the travelling which constantly inspires and teaches, and indeed the people I meet on my journeys

My design motto is…

Keep moving forward

I’m most proud of…

My team

On my wish list is…

Exploring Cuba

My favourite thing to buy for my home is…
